Lugol's iodine, also known as Lugol's solution or Lugol's iodine solution, is a brownish-orange liquid used as an antiseptic and disinfectant in medical and laboratory settings. It is composed of elemental iodine (I2) and potassium iodide (KI) dissolved in water. Lugol's iodine solution is commonly used as a staining reagent in microbiology, particularly in the Gram staining technique, where it serves as the mordant or iodine solution. In Gram staining, Lugol's iodine forms a complex with the crystal violet stain, helping to fix the dye to the bacterial cell walls. It is also used for various other purposes, including as a nutritional supplement, a contrast agent in radiography, and a stain for detecting glycogen in histology.
